Gucci started from humble beginnings. In 1920, founder Guccio Gucci set up shop in Florence featuring his fine leathergood accessories for men and women. Soon thereafter, Guccio and his sons, Aldo, Ugo, Vasco, and Rodolfo, spread the Gucci name to Rome and Milan. By 1953, Gucci made its way to New York City, selling the world famous Gucci classics: hand-crafted handbags with bamboo handles, moccasins with snaffle-bit detailing, trademark G belt buckles, and printed silk foulards and ties. By the late '60s, additional stores appeared in London, Palm Beach, Paris, Beverly Hills, and Tokyo. When Rodolfo's son, Mauritzio, took control, he based Guccci on his grandfather's motto: Stay small to remain great. With that in mind, he proceeded to cut the Gucci line from over 20,000 items to 5,000 and resurrected the prestigious company's focus on high quality accessories. Fortunately for us, the Gucci collection of fine watches survived.
